Iâm sure that many of us played our first games of chess with little, hollow plastic pieces and on one of those ubiquitous checker boards printed on cardboard and folded on a seam along the middle. These were invariable checkered in alternating red and black squares. Too, most of abandoned the cheap set as soon as we were able to move up to larger and more tastefully appointed game equipment.
