Our Zagreb series handcrafted chess set have been a mainstay in our collection for decades. This design became prominent in the 1950’s when it was first used in the World Championship Candidates Match held in Zagreb in 1959. This is a large set ideally suited for tournament play with a 3.875” tall king and a base diameter of 1.625”. Pieces are made from ebonized and natural boxwood and are heavily weighted for exceptional stability on the chess board. Thick green baize pads on the bottom create a soft cushion and allow the pieces to slide smoothly across the chess board. The uniquely shaped knight with its arched neck and turned down head is what distinguishes this chess set from others. As is often found on eastern European sets, the king, queen, and bishop finials are made in the opposite color of the main body. We include two extra queens for pawn promotion and a certificate of authenticity so you will always know what the chess set is, what the wood is, where it came from, and when it was made.

My wife and I chose this chess set and I'm glad we did. Huge fan of the opposite color tops and the knights are an absolute work of art! The pieces are a very nice size and weight.

    Impressive Quality

I'm a really picky shopper and I almost didn't even buy the set, but I'm glad I did. The quality is incredible. Perfect weight, perfect look, and the pieces glide on the board effortlessly if you enjoy sliding your pieces around. The pieces are so nice they inspire you to study chess. I plan on studying Tal - Botvinnik 1960 with these pieces.

Ebonized Yugoslav Staunton, 3.875 inch king

Posted by J. Caudill on 25th Oct 2015

This is a truly superb product. The ebonizing of my new set is so good that I had to hold the black pieces under direct sunlight to distinguish them from genuine ebony. They don't quite have that deep luster found only with ebony but they're very close with a deep and even blackness. And the proportions of the pieces are just right, the way a chess set ought to look. And heavy weighting, too. Note: The kings' base in my set is about 1.75". not 1.625" as advertised. House of Staunton has some serious competition here!
