This chess set package includes our French Lardy Staunton in ebonized and natural boxwood with our Mahogany and Maple Standard Chess Board and matching Mahogany Chess Box. The black and natural boxwood pieces create a sharp and attractive contrast against the rich colors of the mahogany chess board. Our French Lardy is based on the original chess set made by the Lardy Chess Company in France from many years ago. There's nothing fancy about this chess set but it has a masculine handsomeness and a traditional Staunton look that serious chess players prefer for their everyday chess set. Pieces have green billiard cloth pads for a soft feel when moving and are properly weighted for stability on the chess board. The ebonized and natural boxwood are hand polished to a beautiful sheen. The French Lardy is truly a classic and an exceptional chess set for the casual game at home or tournament play.

Smaller than a tournament set and board, simple but very well made. I like the Lardy pattern, and the pieces are nicely weighted. Both pieces and box look good with the board. (Not having silly algebraic notation labels around the edge of the board - especially labels in upper case! - is a definite plus, IMHO.) Overall, nothing fancy, but a good value for a home set to play with and display. Shipping was prompt, even during the holiday season.
