Our Deluxe Old Club Staunton chess sets are an ageless classic that for many years have been a favorite with chess players for its distinguished Staunton design. You may recognize this chess set because it's been displayed on more chess book covers than any other chess set. The pieces are made from high quality pure black ebony and creamy colored boxwood that are hand polished to a rich luster one at a time using the old fashion buffing wheel and traditional solid stick lacquer - a must for heirloom quality chess sets. The end result is a fine Staunton wood chess set.

The Deluxe Old Club is especially popular for tournament play because of its size, weight, and somewhat simple but handsome Staunton design. The king is 3.75" tall with a base 1.625" and will fit nicely on a chess board that has 2" to 2.25" squares. The pieces are heavily weighted giving them a low center of gravity and excellent stability on the chess board. The entire set weighs a full 3 pounds. The pieces are padded with thick green baize on the bottom giving them a nice soft cushion when moving from square to square. Two extra queens are included for pawn promotion, a must for the serious chess player.
