Our British Staunton draws inspiration from a vintage design originating from the old British Chess Company in the mid-1800s. Featuring a purely traditional Staunton design, the pieces are handcrafted from genuine ebony and boxwood with the ebony pieces hand polished to lustrous black obsidian finish. This is a thirty-four-piece set that includes two extra queens for pawn promotion. The king is 3.5”-tall with base diameter of 1.5” making it ideal for your casual chess games at tome. The pieces are heavily weighted for exceptional stability and have thick green baize pads on the bottom for a soft cushion on the chess board. We include a Certificate of Manufacturer so you will always know what the pieces are, when they were made, and where they came from.

Everything perfect. The pieces are nicely weighted and have a wonderful "feel". Well packed and very handsome on the tulip red erable board.

    Very satisfied

Lovely look and feel to all pieces, a pleasure to hold and feel. Classy colour. Pieces very nicely carved and look 'right'. If I have a small quibble (and it is only a small one), I'm inclined to think the kings are a little too tall and broad based relative to the Rooks and minor pieces, which I think would benefit from just a touch more height...or a 3'' king would match their current heights better than the 3.5'' one I got. But overall, very satisfied. One decision I agonized over but feel I got right was to pay extra to get 'ebony' wood instead of 'ebonized'. I thought they would look much the same, but they don't, ebony looks significantly better.
