British Staunton Chess Set in Ebonized Boxwood with Large Walnut Chess Case - 4" King
Item #: BSB400LW
Manufacturer: The Chess Store
Mfg. ID: BSB400LW
This chess set package includes our British Staunton chess set in ebonized boxwood and natural boxwood matched with a beautiful walnut chess case! Our British Staunton chess set originates from the old British Chess Company design from years past. This chess set features a sleek profile, beautifully carved knights that are smaller than any other chess set, and oversize pawns. An unusual but very popular combination that results in an exceptional chess set for both tournament play and a beautiful chess display! As you can see from the photo, the black ebonized chess pieces contrast beautifully against the walnut and maple of the chess board. As with most of our chess sets, 2 extra queens are included. The chess case is made from solid walnut and other wood veneers and has two large drawers, one on each players side. The drawers will hold chess sets with a king base up to 1 5/8" diameter. An unbeatable value at this price!

Great bang for the buck, with only a few minor warnings
This is a great "basic" set for someone looking to add an attractive wooden chess set to their home that is also well designed for real chess play or study. The pieces are heavy, and well balanced. All pieces store away in the wooden drawers without issue. At this price point, I did not expect too much out of the Knight design, but it is a good Knight for the price that we paid on this set. I was seeking a quality "traditional" Staunton look, and these pieces deliver exactly that at one of the best prices we could find anywhere.
The knobs for the drawers on the board leave a little to be desired and feel like some sort of plastic to my untrained touch. However, the rest of the board construction is sound, solid, and very pleasing. The one other warning I would give is that this set is larger than you might imagine due to the extra trim around the perimeter of the board. The height of the board is necessary for the built-in drawers and may end up elevating the board higher than you'd expected. For someone who "gets over" the board, that may be awkward. If space is a premium, or if you worry that the board might sit too high for your tastes, you may be better suited to a shorter board with less "trimming" on the edges.
